Darbi Roberts- Ironman Wales CHAMPION!!

 

A million things go through your head during an Ironman race but the one thing that stuck in my head over and over throughout the very challenging 140.6 miles of Ironman Wales was “I’m so happy to be where I am right now doing the thing that I love with a body capable of doing it.” Ironman Wales was an epic day on so many levels, and a race I will surely never forget.

Flashback to nearly 4 months ago when I was on the verge of being ready to throw in the towel on pro racing altogether. I had just come off one of the worst races of my life (IMTX) which came only 5 weeks after another disappointing performance at IM South Africa. My spring training had been going okay but I was barely squeezing it in on top of writing and editing my dissertation which was due the day after I ran Boston, which was only a week after IMSA. Needless to say, the recovery part of my training was nonexistent and I was completely burned out on life. I graduated with my doctorate the Wednesday after IMTX and was seriously doubting if I wanted to continue competing at such a high level. Was it seriously viable to have a full time job on top of coaching on top of training as a pro and still do all three well? Demetra’s Comeback! Brooklyn Half Race Report

I ran the Brooklyn half marathon two weeks ago in a time of 1:44:26. It was the slowest half marathon I have run since I raced my first one 5 years ago. But I could not take the smile off my face the entire day. I am usually (overly) focused on my times, but the Brooklyn half was a different kind of race – with the focus being one of celebration and triumph.

Many know that I suffered from a fairly bad femoral shaft stress fracture over the fall and winter. It was misdiagnosed, had me on crutches for 6 weeks, and kept me away from running for 5 months. What not all know is that I fell into a depression and really struggled mentally, even as I kept fighting physically with countless hours of water running in addition to biking and swimming. This was not the first injury I ever had to deal with, but this one hit me hard. Even as I hated myself for falling into such a dark place, I could not change my feelings. It was a very challenging time.

But I kept going forward, and I had wonderful support. I thought a lot about a lot of things.   And slowly I got stronger, climbed out of my dark hole, and started to regain perspective. I lost the crutches and marveled at the freedom. I got the OK to try running on the anti- gravity treadmill and was ecstatic the first morning I ran 3 miles. TriBy3 Team Captains

Now that the season is in full swing, I want people to have opportunities in addition to weekly CompuTrainer practices, coached group workouts, and open gym days to get together and train, motivate, push, and inspire their fellow TriBy3 teammates. So, with that goal in mind, I am proud to introduce the 2016 Team TriBy3 Captains. Demetra “The Original” Arapakos-
Demetra has been around since the beginning of Team TriBy3 and has been an integral part of the growth and development of the squad.  But don’t let this proud mom’s tenure with the team make you think she’s soft! You’ll be hard pressed to find an athlete with more fire and competitive drive than Demetra.

Nicholas “The Visor” Hall-
Nick brings a casual seriousness to sport that often takes itself too seriously. Though I will never share his affinity for visors, there are few people I’d rather have in my corner, fancy clothes and all.

Jes “The Pep” Pepe-
The Pep says it all. This girl showed up for every Wednesday morning group run last year. Every one. And she showed up with a smile on her face, crushed the workout, cheered for her teammates, and left still smiling.

Manhattan Captains:

John “Mr. Triathlon” Tan-
John’s passion for triathlon is surpassed only to by the quality of his character. It is literally impossible to spend 5 minutes with him and not have a smile on your face. If we could all be a little more like John, the world would be a happier, faster place with prettier bikes.

Darbi’s IMAZ 2015 Race Report

Going into this race I honestly didn’t know what to expect. After a disappointing DNF at IM Chattanooga, coming back from a long road of fixing a torn hamstring back in March and a string of random sicknesses and injuries, I wasn’t sure how my body was going to hold up. I had made up my mind that I would do what my body allowed me to do and nothing less. I was going to race my race and not worry about what place that got me, so long as I left it all out on the course. Turns out, that was exactly the perspective I needed toeing the line on Sunday morning. So many times we get caught up in comparison, myself in particular. As an endurance distance triathlete who competes at the pro level while still holding down a full time job, I know most of the time that the other women at the top of the field are putting in more training hours than I am and that creates a lot of self-doubt. But I’m starting to learn to trust the process and know how and what to ask of my body. I got to Tempe several days ahead of time on purpose so I could soak it all in, adjust to the time zone, actually relax for once before a race instead of screaming through everything in a day, such that Sunday morning I had my head on straight. Worked out pretty well, it turns out.
